1920’s
Mr. Osmer Deming and his wife relocated to Miami FL and in 1926 founded Superior Oil Co., one of the first wholesale oil distributors in the U.S..
1940’s
In 1944, the pre-eminent cardiologist, Dr. E. Sterling Nichol turned the old King Cole Hotel into the country’s first heart institute. In 1946, Osmer S. Deming suffers a heart attack and is admitted into the Miami Heart Institute and thus begins a legacy of service that survives to this day. There were only six rooms downstairs and after a 10-day stay Mr. Deming got a clean bill of health, but he never truly checked out of the Institute.
1960’s
In 1966, Mr. Deming sold Superior Oil to Phillips Petroleum to, as he said, “allow all my faithful employees to cash-out and realize some of the financial success I’ve experienced.” Mr. Deming began serving as President of the Hospital Board in 1967 and through his’ “force of will, dedication and perseverance” over-saw tremendous growth.
1980’s
In 1984, the 40th anniversary of the hospital, the Institute celebrates by dedicating a new 8-story, 258 bed tower. In 1988, at the age of 88 and after nearly 25-years of as President, Mr. Deming stepped down and by unanimous vote. Mr. Deming’s daughter, Joe Ann Batcheller was elected President. Mrs. Batcheller was instrumental in growing the hospital to over 400 beds, earning the distinction as one of the Top Six heart hospitals in the world.
1990’s
In 1990, Mr. Deming passed away at the age of 90. Mr. Deming was eulogized as, “a man who loved all the challenges of life and enjoyed helping people whether he knew them or not.” And, “truly dedicated…he did everything as a volunteer, never taking a home a paycheck.” The Miami Heart Institute was sold to Columbia/HCA Healthcare
Corporation in 1992.
2000
In 2006, after a successful corporate career, Mr. John Batcheller, the next Deming-Batcheller generation, decided it was time to live up to the family legacy of service. John and his wife, Lisa, the former Director of Marketing for the Institute, saw the tremendous need to provide a compassionate alternative to seniors. By helping compassionate entrepreneurs begin the next chapter of their lives, they could positively impact communities, one business a time. In 2007, John and Lisa launched Stay at Home® after over a year of development working with industry experts in the hospital, home care, franchise, and pharmaceutical industries. The business model, based on over 25 year’s experience, was packaged to provide a ‘business in the box concept’ and franchise owner support programs were unveiled. Early adopters to were sold franchises.
Today
Stay at Home® is a successful franchise organization with locations in Florida, Tennessee, Georgia and Pennsylvania. The Deming-Batcheller family legacy of service is very much alive and is embodied as, Stay at Home® #1 In the Compassionate In-Home Care Market.
Future
It is John and Lisa’s vision to one day break ground on the Stay at Home® Compassion Campus featuring training facilities, a franchise owner retreat, and a research/learning center to address the issues facing the elderly.
John and Lisa’s sense of service does not begin and end at the doors of Stay at Home®. For many years John has been involved with The Boy Scouts of America and Lisa with The Girl Scouts. Both are active within their Church and committed to their community. As John often states,
“compassion is not what we sell, it’s what we stand for; it is our legacy.”
